Columbus Day Weekend 2011

Columbus Day weekend provided visitors and residents alike with balmy temperatures and spectacular sunny days.  This was a rare treat for what has often been a cold and rainy weekend. The cottage has been buttoned up for the winter.  The Ice Cream Factory sold out of ice cream and Andrew's Harborside served it's last breakfast of the season.  No more sticky buns to tempt us till the spring!  This afternoon the south bound toll booths will be backed up for the last busy weekend of the year.  Our guests in the apartment are from Streamwood, IL and they follow a couple from Eau Claire, WI!

The colors of fall are just starting to appear.  Pumpkins, cornstalks, and hay bales decorate homes and businesses in and around town.  You can follow the foliage as it reaches it's peak at the link on the right.  We mark the passage of fall by attending some of the many fairs in the area.  Our favorites are the Common Ground Fair, always held the last weekend of September, and our local Fall Foliage Fair, always held on Columbus Day weekend. For more information about agricultural fairs click on the link at the left.

Fall is the perfect time to visit the region.  Our rates are reduced on Columbus Day. Temperatures are crisp but not yet freezing.  The sounds of local football being played on the school grounds permeates the air even here in town.  Although there is still much to do; movies at the local theater, great restaurants to dine at, music and entertainment at the Opera House, walks through the Botanical Gardens and Land Trust properties, life returns to a quieter pace.
